M2 Mac into DFU mode

To put an M2 Mac into DFU mode, connect it to another Mac with a USB-C cable and press and hold the power button, then immediately hold the power, right shift, left control, and left option keys for about 10 seconds. Release all keys except the power button and hold it for another 3 seconds, then release it to enter DFU mode. This is often a last resort for unbootable Macs and is used to revive or restore the firmware using Apple Configurator 2.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Connect the Macs: Connect the M2 Mac to another Mac (running macOS Monterey or later) with a USB-C cable. Plug the cable into the leftmost port on the M2 MacBook Pro or MacBook Air.
  2. Turn off the M2 Mac: Press and hold the power button on the M2 Mac for up to 10 seconds to ensure it is completely off.
  3. Enter DFU mode: Press and release the power button, then immediately press and hold the following keys for about 10 seconds: power button, right shift, left control, and left option.
  4. Release the keys: Release the right shift, left control, and left option keys, but continue holding the power button for another 3 seconds, then release it.
  5. Verify DFU mode: Check the other Mac. A DFU window with your Mac should appear in the Finder or Apple Configurator 2.
What to do next
  • Revive: In the DFU window, click "Revive Mac" to reinstall the firmware without erasing your data.
  • Restore: If reviving doesn't work, you may need to use the "Restore" option, which will erase all data on the Mac.
